Wooden Gates
To build wooden gates, you need to prepare the following equipment. This project will require experience handling carpentry tools. You may need an assistant if you are not too skilled in using them. This is a 3 x 3 gate. You will need to add more materials if you want to make a bigger gate.
Required Tools and Materials
One full size framing square
Four 4 inch C-clamps
Electric drill with 3/16th and 1/16th drill bits
Set of saw horse
Bottle of exterior wood glue
Electric circular saw
Set of 3 1/2 inch strap hinges (11 pcs, 3/4 inch x 3 1/2 inch)
Phillips screwdriver
100 – 1 1/4 inch x no.10 non tapered screws
Boards 39 in long
Step 1
Put 10 of the 39 inch boards on the saw horses. Mark a couple of them 35 in long. Set it aside.
Step 2
Mark 8 of these as 3 1/2 in at the end. Use a square to mark the line on the boards. Measure at the bottom of the eight 35 in and add a square mark. Measure 3 1/2 at the 35 inch to make a square.
Step 3
Line the eight boards with the marks on the saw horse. Put the 35 in board on top (this is the one you cut). Even the end along the lines and ends of the boards on the horse. Adjust the 35 inch board to set some glue below it. Apply the clamp on.
Step 4
To continue building the wooden gate, repeat the third step for the opposite side. Set the framing square onto the first board. Check for the square and repeat this for the other side. Drill four holes around 3/4 of an inch at the edge. Attach it. Repeat this step for the other four clamps.
Step 5
Beginning from the left side, position a spacer at the bottom and top in-between the 1st and 2nd boards. Lift the first board so you can add some glue below the other boards.
Repeat this step for the top. After ensuring the second board is in place, fasten it in place with a screw. Position the spacers onto to the other boards. Fasten them in place.
Step 6
When all the parts are in place, set the 11th board in a diagonal manner from the bottom to the top, noting where the boards meet up. Slice it to fit and apply some glue. Screw them into place.
Tips and Warnings
Wear eye goggles when cutting boards with the saw. You should don gloves to protect your hands from blisters and cuts. Allow the glue time to dry after you first apply it. This will vary depending on the product.
There is an old saying in carpentry, “measure twice, cut once”. Follow it always. Make sure you are working in a clear and clean setting so parts do not get lost.
Learning how to build wooden gates is not that hard to do. If you have the know-how and skills, this project will not take too long to finish.
